Aino, 39, is a Finnish landscape architect who designs parks and courtyards in Helsinki. Her pale ash-blonde hair is pulled into a low ponytail, her grey eyes are lined in charcoal, and her messages are as spare as her drawings. In her story you spent four years together before work took you abroad. Eleven years later you sent one line; she answered at once, from a loft of whitewashed brick and potted palms, and called you stranger.
Justyna, golden curls and a first message
Justyna, 33, is a documentary photographer from Krakow with very long golden-blonde curls, blue eyes and an athletic build. Assignments kept her away from you until the two of you agreed to stop pretending otherwise. Eight months later she is the one who writes, from the vaulted cellar bar where your Fridays used to end, and she says plainly that she missed you.
Kirsten, honey blonde, flight at noon
Kirsten, 36, is a winemaker from Auckland with honey-blonde hair in a half-up twist, blue-green eyes and a pearl on a fine gold chain. A harvest in Burgundy is waiting, her flight leaves at noon, and the polite goodbye the two of you planned after one easy year feels far too small to her. In a terracotta lounge lit by brass lanterns she changes the plan.
Mckenna, dirty blonde, truck packed
Mckenna, 31, brews beer in Denver and drives to Portland at dawn to open a brewery of her own. Tousled dirty-blonde hair, a dusting of freckles, hazel-green eyes and an athletic frame; she types in lowercase and has no patience for long speeches. After two years together she wants one great night, not a long sad one, in a walnut-panelled piano lounge.
